How can I prepare for an eye exam with a new doctor?

Even the most seasoned eye care patients can be unsure of what to expect when seeing a new eye doctor for the first time. Whether it’s your first appointment with any doctor, or simply just a new face, there are several pieces of information you need to keep handy when going in for your visit. The Mayo Clinic suggests you should expect questions about your vision history, including any current eye problems; any past eye problems; being born prematurely; whether your currently wear glasses or contacts; your satisfaction with your current lenses; any medications you’re taking; medical problems in the past or present; any allergies to foods or medications; and your family history of vision problems, such as glaucoma or cataracts.

Knowing the answers to the questions ahead of time will save you time and headaches at the office. The doctor poses these questions for the sake of your safety and the future health of your vision. Providing accurate and honest answers will help to ensure you are getting the best care possible for you and your family.

The second thing you should expect is to need is your current contact lenses. Your doctor will use these to determine if your prescription is up to date and the best choice for you at that time. You may need to take the lenses out during the exam, but it’s important to have them handy as you walk in the door, whether you’re wearing them or not. Finally, don’t forget to also bring your True Care discount card, which will get you even more benefits and savings along the way. It’s an unbeatable way to improve both your vision and the size of your wallet.
