Trick-or-treating may be a popular fall activity for children and teenagers, but the pillowcase full of sugary snacks they come home with can take a major toll on their dental health. Many dentists report a surge in dental emergencies during the season between Halloween and Christmas, and it’s no mystery why. Lots of Halloween and holiday candies are packed with sugar or have chewy, taffy-like consistencies.

This poses a risk for cavities and the breakage of crowns or braces. To keep your children from suffering from these conditions, it’s recommended that you encourage them to only take one or two pieces of candy at each house, as opposed to entire handfuls. Also, it’s important to remember to brush your teeth after consuming sugary foods. If you’re interested in passing out dental-friendly treats to kids around your neighborhood, consider stocking up on sugarless gum, crackers, small bags of pretzels, and peanuts.

You can also offer alternatives to the traditional Halloween treats and give out pennies or other inexpensive gifts like ghost-shaped erasers or orange pencils. As always, it’s important to consult with your dentist about the proper care of your children’s and your own teeth – especially during the candy-crazy season of Halloween.
